Physician Disability Insurance: Physician Shortage

October 31, 2012 by Chuck Krugh, CFP

Physician Disability Insurance Physician ShortagePhysician Disability Insurance: Physician Shortage

America has a deficit of primary care physicians. As baby boomers grow older, their health will dwindle. What’s more, with new legislative measures such as Obamacare, it’s expected to bring 32 million uninsured to doctors. With more uninsured patients & less physician resources, it may affect the outcome of many professionals looking into this career path.

According to the American Association of Medical Colleges, the United States will be short staffed 45,000 physicians by 2020.

Of the physicians who do exist, their professions are badly distributed. Where a physician chooses to practice is up to them, but 90% of internal medicine physicians work in urban areas. As some physicians can work anywhere from rural areas to major cities, they have dedicated their profession to help those less fortunate who can only rely on Medicaid or have no insurance at all. And even though all Physicians take an Oath to help others regardless of socioeconomic standing, they must choose their path. Compared to specialists, primary care doctors will not only make less, but may take an even larger financial hit to treat the upswing of uninsured, doctor deprived patients. With programs in place that offer partial loan forgiveness, that medical school debt may take a little longer to pay off. As enrollment slowly drops in our profession, it is clear that the income potential is falling with it.

As our Physician shortage increases, our active medical professionals will burnout at a much faster rate.

As your stress level increases, burnout is more likely to occur. Reaching that point may lead to simple mistakes that may prevent you from working in the future. One of the best ways to insure your income is physicians disability income protection policy.
