MetLife to Suspend the Sale of New Disability Insurance
If you’ve been putting off getting disability coverage, now is the time to act. Here’s why: One of the best disability contracts for physicians on the market – and one of the best values – is the MetLife policy. Unlike many cheaper disability policies, it’s a ‘true own occupation’ contract – meaning that the policy will pay benefits if your disability results in your inability to work in your specialty of medicine or dentistry.
The best part about MetLife is that they are usually 20% less expensive than most other carriers, all other things being equal, for most applicants.
So why the rush? Because MetLife recently announced that it will be discontinuing the sale of new disability insurance products, effective September 1st 2016. All applications have to be complete and submitted to the MetLife underwriting office by October 31st.
After that date, you will no longer be able to purchase a MetLife disability policy. The next most affordable own occupation disability policy currently available is about 20% more expensive for similar coverage. And it may become even more expensive, without MetLife competing in the marketplace.
Statistics Are Higher Than You Think
According to the Social Security Administration, 1 in 4 of today’s 20-year olds will become disabled at some point in their career.
When Dr. Vincent Macaluso was still in medical school, back in 1991, he got the devastating news that he had multiple sclerosis. Nevertheless, he completed medical school, and chose a specialty that still allowed him to work even with his physical challenges. Today, he is 47 years old and specializes in treating other people with the same disease. He has written a well-received book, Multiple Sclerosis From Both Sides of the Desk, about his experiences.
Unfortunately, not all doctors can continue to function in their chosen profession after becoming disabled. If you need to be on your feet for extended periods, need to be able to concentrate for long periods of time, or if you need fine motor skills, your entire career could well be at significant risk for disability.
